Fort Wayne AC Repair Tips You Can Do Yourself

03/26/2014 15:02

Fort Wayne AC repair could be very expensive when you have to call in a professional. Of course there are times when a costly repair is absolutely unavoidable, but you can troubleshoot your system first, before calling in a professional. Many times your problem is something you are able to easily fix.

It’s often the case that your unit is not working for the simplest of reasons. In can be frustrating to pay out a hundred dollars or more just to have a technician come out and flip a breaker back on. There are some quick and easy checks you can perform yourself before you call for help from a Fort Wayne AC repair company. These checks often help you save a lot of money too.

DIY AC Repair Tips

Here are a few things you can try if your AC unit is in need of repair, not running at all or maybe just blowing less than cool air:

1.  Check your breaker

If the unit won't come on at all your breaker could have tripped. If you have several appliances, lights and other things on the same breaker often it will trip and the AC will not operate. This is a quick check that can save you money, frustration, and even embarrassment.

2.  Change your filter

Many air conditioner repairs can be avoided by consistently changing your filter. If your filter is dirty and clogged, it can cause many issues with your unit. Lack of air flow can cause a lack of cooling efficiency with the system. In some cases a clogged filter can lead to your system icing up. Filters should be checked often and changed on a regular basis.

3.  Examine your thermostat

This is another part of the system that can cause you dollars and distress. If the unit is battery operated it may just need new batteries. Make sure you have the thermostat set for a temperature below the room temperature. Insure that the unit is not turned off or set to just have the fan blow. Settings can get inadvertently changed.

The steps above are some things you should try if your air conditioner unit is on the blink. These can save you a lot of money before you call in a professional air conditioner repair company. Of course, some things dealing with AC repair can only be handled by a competent and professional service company. Things like adding Freon and electrical repairs have to be done by specialists.

You have to have your air conditioner working though. Do what you can to make it work when you have issues with. But don't hesitate to call a professional! The experts at the Hignell Companies are ready and willing to help.

5 Steps to Buying Group Health Insurance with Success

03/20/2014 15:47

Finding quality, affordable group health insurance for your business should not be a stressful task. From companies with 10 or less employees to those with 100 or more, there are multiple group health insurance plans to consider.

While you may not be required to offer group health insurance benefits to your employees, this shows that you truly care about them as people. Along with this, comes happier workers who are more likely to stay with the company for an extended period of time.

Follow these steps when it comes time to buy group health insurance for the first time or make a change to a new provider.

  1. Learn more about the industry and current state of the market. Before you ever contact a health insurance company direct or hire a broker, you should personally learn more about the industry. This includes everything from insurance carrier ratings to average premiums and much more.
  2. Consult with your employees. Is this something you have to do? Absolutely not. Is it something that makes sense? Of course. While you don't have to speak with every employee personally, you may want to send out a survey or questionnaire as a means of gathering targeted information.
  3. Go online to receive quotes. In the past, obtaining quotes was a time consuming process as you had to contact companies and brokers directly via telephone. In today's day and age, you can receive information online without delay.
  4. Make a purchase and don't look back. It doesn't matter if you are the company owner or an HR professional, this is a big decision. At some point, after you have completed all your research, you need to choose a policy and move forward with the purchase.
  5. Compare all your options. At the very least, you should compare a quote from three different health insurance providers. This will give you a clear understanding of the industry, while allowing you to better understand which plan is right for your company.

Additional types, of coverage, that are available:

  • Dental
  • Life
  • Short term disability
  • Long term disability
  • Vision

How to Buy a Mattress

03/06/2014 15:52

Know This before You Shop

How do you sleep? Data collected at Mattress Man indicates that people who normally sleep on their sides might need a softer mattress than back or stomach sleepers. However, a mattress of medium firmness is typically comfortable for everyone.

What size do you require? Standard mattress dimensions in the U.S. are: twin, 39 inches by 75 inches; double or full, 54 inches by 75 inches; queen, 60 inches by 80 inches; standard king, 76 inches by 80 inches; and California king, 72 inches by 84 inches. Some high-end mattresses don't come in sizes smaller than a queen, so make sure the mattress you try in the store is available in the size you are wanting.

What the best mattress has

  • Adequate spinal support. Your mattress should allow your spine to assume the same natural curve when you lie down as when you're standing.
  • Motion isolation. Low-end innerspring mattresses transmit more motion from one person in the bed to another, while foam beds and high-end innersprings transmit less.
  • Durability. Although experts at Mattress Man warn that a mattress will probably last only about half as long as its warranty period, they do consider a long warranty a reliable sign of a more durable mattress.
  • A good warranty. In addition to the length of the warranty, pay attention to how it covers sagging, the most common problem with aging mattresses.
  • Freedom of movement. Some foam beds make changing positions difficult because of the way they conform to the body.
  • A trustworthy manufacturer. If the manufacturer has a Better Business Bureau rating of B or better, you can feel reasonably confident that it will stand behind its warranty.

'Obamacare' here to stay

02/27/2014 16:29

WASHINGTON — The explosive politics of enrolling for healthcare have divided the nation, but America's governors, Republicans and Democrats alike, suggest that President Obama's healthcare overhaul is here to stay.

While governors from Connecticut to Louisiana sparred Sunday over how best to improve the nation's economy, governors of both parties shared a far more pragmatic outlook on the controversial program known as "Obamacare" as millions of their constituents begin to be covered.

"We're just trying to make the best of a bad situation," said Republican Gov. Terry Branstad of Iowa, who called the health care law "unaffordable and unsustainable" yet something he has to implement by law. "We're trying to make it work as best we can for the people of Iowa."

Hosting them at an evening dinner, the president made joking reference to the ambitions of some governors to follow him into the White House.

"Tonight we want to make sure that all of you make yourselves at home – which I'm sure some of you are thinking, that's been the plan all along,'' Obama said to laughter.

He also said: "But keep in mind what a wise man once wrote: 'I am more than contented to be governor and shall not care if I never hold another office.'''

The former governor who said those words was Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican governor of New York who went on to become the nation's 26th president.

"So I guess plans change,'' President Obama said.

Here are steps you can take to determine what the best way to insure your family is.

Explanations for each step can be found below.

  1. Determine what kind of coverage and how many different policies you will need.
  2. Decide what kind of deductible, co-pays and insurance will best meet your needs.
  3. Find options for comparison.
  4. Double check that the options you have found are offered by real insurance companies.
  5. Compare the options against each other to make the best choice for you.

What Health Insurance Policies Will You Be in Need of?

If you need to Enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace for your family then consider two approaches to keep the cost of insurance down.

*If all family members are generally healthy, you can cover the entire family as a unit with one policy.

*However, if one or more family members have ongoing health problems, chronic conditions, or major medical challenges, or you anticipate the need for surgery in the next year, you might choose instead to buy two or more policies, one each to cover the family members who have ongoing medical challenges, which will be very expensive, then one less expensive family coverage for the rest.

Why do you need to buy health insurance?

02/20/2014 14:42

You may be able to fit a few doctor's visits or prescriptions into your budget.  But if you have a major medical event, you can buy health insurance which can protect your family's finances.

Say you or a family member has a bad accident or is diagnosed with a serious disease.  The needed surgeries, treatments, medications and specialists could easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Having a health plan is smart

Health Insurance is much more economical in the long run than to run the risk of major damage to your family’s finances.

If you have a health plan, you’ll also be more likely to get routine checkups and preventive care which helps you stay healthy, and saves money on medical costs in the long run.

It can be affordable, too

Buying health insurance can fit your budget because you can choose the coverage you want.  For example, choosing a higher deductible can lower your monthly rate.

Issues Responding to U.S. Health Care Reform

01/31/2014 16:32

Health care reform presents unique challenges and opportunities for employers.

In particular, an individual coverage mandate, the opening of Insurance Exchanges and the availability of federal premium subsidies for low-income workers in 2014 requires an employer to decide whether to play, sponsor a health benefit plan that meets specific minimum requirements, or pay, forgo plan sponsorship, pay a penalty and require employees to secure coverage for themselves through the Exchanges.

But the decision is more complex than simply play versus pay. There is a spectrum of approaches to help employers reshape their health benefits programs, optimize their own costs in 2014 and beyond, and direct employees to advantageous coverage options. Employers need to select the approach that aligns with their total rewards philosophy and strategy, and provides optimal value in terms of both cost and talent.
